Artificial intelligence has come a long way in the past couple of years — and its practical applications are staggering. But to some small business owners, A.I. may still be just a concept out of sci-fi that conjures up terrifying images of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Terminator.”

Thanks to the surging popularity of chatbots, the idea is starting to seem a little less scary.

Chatbots have been around for decades, but companies are only now beginning to exploit the technology from a business point-of-view. Just as a robot may simulate all or part of the actions o a human being, a chatbot is essentially a bit of interface software designed to simulate human conversation. Thanks to a few clever coding tricks, chatbots are able to pick up on linguistic ques in the responses from users and begin to learn.

The more a chatbot communicates with a particular user, the more it is able to pick up on language patterns, topics of interest and more in order to respond accordingly.

What is a Chatbot and How They Work?

Upon first glance, it may seem like chatbots are just a silly way for users to fritter away an afternoon engaged in a fake conversation. But the truth is, they can actually be incredibly useful in streamlining various tasks.

The better chatbots are plugged into a number of data resources via pre-programmed protocols. This means they are able to deliver information or services on demand — like breaking news stories, cinema times or other pertinent information based on a users preferences. Because chatbots are designed to absorb user information and preferences, they remember things. This means if you ask a chatbot what the weather is going to be like on Sunday afternoon, the program will already know your precise location and the level of detail you’re looking for.

More complex chatbots do not only draw upon multiple data sources in order to answer queries, but they can also aggregate multiple apps in order to perform relatively complicated tasks. A prime example is Assist’s local services chatbot. It leverages the combined power of completely different apps like Uber, OLSET and Eat24. which means you can order a taxi, make dinner reservations and book a hotel room all by sending a few lines of text to Assist via Facebook Messenger.

That makes life simple for users, and it also automatically provides business owners with plenty of new sales leads.

What is a Chatbot and How Can I Use It For Business?

How Can I Use a Chatbot for My Business?

Although some of the more high-tech chatbots are capable of providing some relatively high-level service, chatbots definitely are not for everyone. By and large, chatbots are going to be most useful for retailers or service providers dealing with regular and frequent orders. That might include small media outlets, restaurants, information hubs or digital retailers.

One of the reasons that chatbots can be so instrumental for smaller businesses is because they can vastly reduce the amount of time staff members must spend answering frequently asked questions that could be delaying a purchasing decision online. Bearing that in mind, small businesses operating out of virtually any industry could benefit from investing in a simple chatbot that is programmed to relay information from various FAQ or blog pages.

Not only do basic functions like this free up your time, but they also help to forge a sense of brand loyalty — so long as everything is working properly.

How Do I Create a Chatbot?

If you’re keen to explore how you might be able to deploy a basic chatbot on your company website, there are a few resources worth checking out.

If you already know a little bit about coding and would like to try to create your own chatbot, The Pandorabots Playground is a free and user-friendly development area designed to help businesses create chatbots with loads of different features.

That being said, the team at Pandorabots also works with companies in order to produce chatbots based on their specific requirements. Other chatbot services like nanorep work with businesses to produce relatively simple — but, according to the company, effective A.I. solutions.

Just remember: the key to using chatbots effectively is to make sure they enhance your customer’s experience. So don’t hop on the bandwagon and invest in a chatbot just because you want your business to look modern or trendy.

So if you’re truly interested in deploying a chatbot and think it could be a smart move for your company, sit down and have a long, hard think about why your customers would benefit. Then come up with a list of possible functions or key information the chatbot would need to provide, and always do your research.

San Antonio Façade Improvement Grant Program

San Antonio recently extended the deadline for its Façade Improvement Grant Program. Through the program, eligible businesses can apply for grants of between $5,000 and $50,000 to make exterior upgrades to their facilities. Improvements include projects like landscaping and signage upgrades. The program first began accepting applications in July. In addition to extending the deadline, the city also expanded eligibility areas to reach more businesses. October 31 is the new deadline to apply.

Main Street Ventures Launch Grants

Cincinnati startup booster Main Street Ventures just provided a new round of startup grants to businesses in the area. The nonprofit provided $224,592 in funds to 14 startups for this third quarter grant cycle. The organization first started providing grants to local businesses in 2018, and has since distributed more than $3 million to more than 100 companies. Though this latest round of funding has already been awarded, Main Street Ventures runs a quarterly grant program. So eligible businesses can apply for more funding going forward.

Power Up Spartanburg Grants and Loans

OneSpartanburg recently pledged millions of dollars to support small businesses in Spartanburg County, South Carolina over the next five years. So far, Power Up Spartanburg has awarded $500,000 in small business loans and grants. And they have even more to give. The program is open to all eligible small businesses in the county. But 30 percent of all funding is earmarked for women and minority-owned businesses. In addition to the funding options, the program provides educational programs and resources for entrepreneurs. Interested businesses can fill out an intake form online to determine what funding opportunities you may qualify for.

NJSBDC SSBCI Grant

The New Jersey Small Business Development Center recently received a SSBCI Grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration to provide resources and support to small businesses throughout New Jersey. The State Small Business Credit Initiative is a program of the American Rescue Plan that aims to support small businesses, especially those in historically under-served communities and entrepreneurs needing additional support. The Rutgers Business School’s NJSBDC Network will facilitate the program, which will consist of legal services, accounting assistance, and financial advisory services. The program does not provide direct financial assistance to businesses. But the SSBCI grant allows the school to provide resources to businesses needing assistance.

The Miami Foundation Open for Business Grant

The Miami Foundation recently received a $20 million grant through Wells Fargo’s Open for Business Fund. Wells Fargo’s program includes $420 million in total funds, which is being distributed to business groups and nonprofits throughout the U.S. This latest award will allow The Miami Foundation to help local small business owners access capital and navigate various economic issues. Additionally, The Miami Foundation will distribute funds from the grant to local nonprofits and businesses, offering microgrants of up to $20,000 and low interest loans of between $1,000 and $100,000.

Etsy Amplifies Support for Small Business Owners Ahead of the Holiday Rush

Etsy Amplifies Support for Small Business Owners Ahead of the Holiday Rush

[ad_1]

Etsy is stepping up its support as the holiday season approaches to ensure its community of millions of small business owners thrives during the most critical shopping season. In a letter to the sellers, Etsy’s Chief Operating Officer, Raina Moskowitz, outlined key updates that promise to bolster support.

Enhanced Purchase Protection: For small business owners, even one mishap or unexpected refund can cut into thin profit margins. Recognizing the need for greater financial security, Etsy has doubled the coverage of its Purchase Protection for sellers. Previously capped at $250, the coverage now stands at a more substantial $500. This change will cover over 99% of orders, should they meet the eligibility criteria. If a buyer’s order faces unforeseen issues, Etsy will manage the refund, ensuring the seller retains their earnings. By prominently featuring these benefits in their marketing strategy, Etsy aims to assure buyers of the reliability of their purchases, which in turn can catalyze more sales for sellers.

Round-the-Clock Support: For many sellers, Etsy isn’t just a hobby; it’s a livelihood. Given the diverse range of time zones and the global nature of the platform, Etsy is providing 24/7 support. Over 80% of all chat queries receive a response within a minute. Furthermore, almost 90% of concerns are resolved within a day. For sellers facing the daunting situation of account suspensions, Etsy has established a streamlined appeal process backed by specialized agents.

Upholding Authenticity: Etsy’s charm lies in its unique, handmade, and creative offerings. Etsy is ramping up its monitoring efforts to ensure the platform remains true to its core ethos. The focus is on celebrating the platform’s authenticity while curbing listings that detract from it. As a testament to this commitment, there has been a 112% increase in removing listings that violate Etsy’s handmade policy this year.

In addition to these measures, Etsy offers resources to aid its sellers. A holiday checklist and a workshop scheduled for October 4 will provide sellers with expert advice for holiday preparations. And for those looking to make the most of the peak shopping days, details about participating in this year’s Cyber Sale will be released soon.

As the holiday season looms, Etsy is leaving no stone unturned in championing its community of small business owners. With heightened financial protection, robust support, and a renewed commitment to authenticity, Etsy promises a platform and a partner for its sellers. As businesses gear up for the end-of-year rush, it’s evident that Etsy is committed to ensuring their success. Small business owners on the platform have much to look forward to as they navigate the busy weeks ahead.

Square’s New Suite of Features is a Game-Changer for Small Business Owners

[ad_1]

Square’s September 26, 2023 announcement highlighted more than a dozen new features designed to bolster sellers’ competitive edge. The centerpiece is Square Online’s ‘Themes,’ offering 19 design templates. These templates, combined with customizable fonts, colors, and layouts, allow businesses, regardless of their domain – from retailers to restaurants – to craft a unique online identity. This becomes an indispensable tool since nearly 25% of consumers avoid shopping from businesses without an online presence.

Kyra Bussanich, Founder of Kyra’s Bake Shop, shared her firsthand experience: “With Square Online’s latest features, I have been able to customize my site with my brand’s fonts, colors, and high-res photos of our pastries. When customers come into the store and they experience this magical wonderland with purple walls, all of this is also echoed on our website.”

The integration of generative AI promises to revolutionize product listings. The AI will generate compelling titles and descriptions for businesses with expansive catalogs, thereby improving operational efficiency. Randy Fulk, Co-Founder of Korie’s Kloset, emphasized the transformative power of this feature, noting the time saved and the increasing tailoring of descriptions for his business.

Beyond these core offerings, Square also aids businesses in refining their inventory management. Features such as archiving old items and embedding barcode label printing functionalities promise to streamline inventory tasks. This is especially useful during the holiday season rush when time-saving becomes paramount.

On the fulfillment front, the company has also rolled out enhanced tools like the new Shipments Page and an integration with Shippo. These tools simplify the daunting task of order fulfillment, ensuring efficient and timely deliveries—a significant selling point for customers during the holidays.

Engaging and retaining customers, especially amidst the holiday buzz, can be challenging. To that end, Square’s new offerings include features like ‘House Accounts’ for deferred payments, image and GIF inclusive Text Message Marketing, and ‘Retail Bundles’ for themed gift baskets. These features enhance the shopping experience for consumers and offer businesses innovative ways to engage and drive sales.

Roshan Jhunja, Head of Retail at Square, summed it up, “Retailers choose Square because our technology helps automate critical operations within their businesses and scales with them as they grow. As their needs become more sophisticated, they can tap further into Square’s fully integrated ecosystem of tools. We remain focused on providing sellers with the technology they need to unlock new growth channels and maximize their sales during the holidays and beyond.”

For small business owners, Square’s latest suite of features is more than just an upgrade; it’s an avenue to transform their operations and significantly boost their holiday season sales. As the market becomes increasingly competitive, integrating such state-of-the-art tools becomes not just an option but a necessity. It remains to be seen how these tools will play out in real-world scenarios. Still, their introduction alone marks a significant shift in how businesses can operate and engage with consumers.
